Elle permet de mesurer une distance à partir d'un événement visible et audible, par exemple lors d'un orage. Les divisions sur le cadran sont basées sur la vitesse du son dans l'air (340 mètres par seconde). Lancez les aiguilles au moment où vous voyez l'éclair et arrêtez-les lorsque vous entendez le tonnerre.
